The new BMW M2 CS G87 is getting ready for its reveal. And although the prototypes were always fully covered so far, it is not hard to imagine what it will look like. The prototypes we photographed looked mostly like the regular BMW M2 as we know it, but with an additional front lip and a subtle ducktail wing embedded in the trunk lid. Rendered images of the final product have already popped up on the internet, but I think most of them are wrong about one specific detail.

I’ve seen BMW M2 CS renders with red grille inlays and a few other red details. And I understand very well why this assumption was made; BMW had a similar approach with the latest M3 CS and M4 CS. But I don’t think they’ll give the M2 CS the same treatment. Here’s why: I spotted an M2 CS prototype with sloppily wrapped camouflage. And most importantly; it allows bits of bright red paint to peek through between the seams. A full “Toronto Red” body is probably hiding underneath the wrap.

BMW banned red paint on CS models

BMW Toronto Red can be opted for many BMW M models, including the non-CS M3 an M4. But the G80 M3 CS and G82 M4 CS were only available in a small varity of colors. Both M3 CS and M4 CS could be ordered in Brooklyn Grey Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic. Additionally, the M3 CS could be painted Signal Green or Frozen Solid White. The M4 CS had Frozen Isle of Man Green and Riviera Blue as additional options. Usually, all kinds of other colors can be chosen through the BMW Idividual programme, but this was not the case with BMWs latest CS models. So BMW basically made red tones unavailable for these cars. And that makes sense; a fully red car with red details would look a bit odd, right?

What will the new BMW M2 CS look like?

So, what conclusions should we draw from a BMW M2 CS prototype teasing its bright red body between the sheets? It could either mean that BMW will drop the ban on red paints with the M2 CS, allowing clients to order non-contrasting body colors on their new M2 CS. Or the new M2 CS won’t have any red details at all. Or maybe there will be more color options for the details, instead of just red. Who knows? We’ll have to wait a few months for a final answer. The new BMW M2 CS will be revealed in spring 2025.
